Fall 2012 Semester Preview
The Honors Program has a plethora of events happening during the fall semester, and I want to share a quick snapshot with you of what the semester will look like!

Fireside
Chat: Dr. Merlyn Mowrey
September 12, 2012 | 8pm
“Are We ‘Mortals’ Defined by Death?: Making Sense of
Life and the Fact of Death”
The Honors Outreach Network and the Honors Program will host
a Fireside Chat Series this fall semester! Fireside Chats are an Honors
tradition, and will take place in Larzelere Hall in the Honors Alumni Room in
the basement.
This Fireside Chat will feature prestigious guest speaker, Dr.
Merlyn Mowrey speaking about the exploration of death and dying. Dr. Mowrey is
an Honors professor in the Philosophy and Religion department, and teaches REL 334H “Death and Dying,” an Honors course
available in the fall semester.
Seating for this fireside chat is limited, so you must call

"Brooke's Dream" Hospital Rooms Revealed
September 14, 2012
Over the last year, the Honors Program Philanthropic Society
(HPPS) raised money for and volunteered with “Brooke’s Dream,” a renovation
project at the Detroit Children’s Hospital, based on the designs of Brooke
Wise, a CMU graduate who worked to redesign children’s treatment rooms at the
hospital, but tragically lost her life in an automobile accident. HPPS raised
money as well as visited the hospital to assist in the renovation of the rooms.
The rooms have been completed and the official revealing will take place on
September 14, and a group of Honors students and HEV Interior Design students will travel
to Detroit to attend.

CROP Walk
October 7, 2012 | 1pm
Participating in the annual CROP Hunger Walk is an Honors
tradition that will be carried on this year. A group of Honors students will
attend the CROP walk, which is held to raise money and awareness
for hunger and poverty in the local area and worldwide. Participants gather donations and
pledges in advance and can choose to walk 1 or 3 miles the day of the CROP walk. If interested, please contact the Honors
Outreach Network.

Chat: A Conversation with President George E. Ross
The Honors Outreach Network and the Honors Program will host
a Fireside Chat Series this fall semester! Fireside Chats are an Honors
tradition, and will take place in Larzelere Hall in the Honors Alumni Room in
the basement.
This Fireside Chat will feature prestigious guest speaker, President George E.
Ross, in a personal conversation with Honors students. Dr. Ross has been
President of Central Michigan University since 2010, before which he served as
President of Alcorn State University.
Seating for this fireside chat is limited, so you must call
the Honors Office at (989) 774-3902 or stop by Powers 104 to sign up!
Silent Auction
October 24, 2012 | 9am-4pm
Every year the Centralis first-year class works together to
gather donations and host a Silent Auction to benefit the Community Compassion
Network, an organization that serves Mid-Michigan by hosting Mobile Food
Pantries in a variety of locations throughout the year. The Silent Auction will
be held in the UC Rotunda from 8-5pm on October 24, so go check it out; there
are items for everyone! If you would like to donate to the Silent Auction
please email the Honors Office at honors@cmich.edu.

Service-Palooza Conference
November 4, 2012 | 1pm-6pm
Volunteers Needed
The students of HON 100 “Introduction to Honors” and their
mentors will spend the day volunteering for a number of local, national, and
international service organizations serving a variety of populations and topics
including: local and world hunger relief, women’s aid services, child
protective services and more. Every student will participate in a Kids Against Hunger project, as well as have
the opportunity to attend breakout service sessions. The Honors Program is
looking for volunteers to lead activities and service projects throughout the

Creationism and Evolution
The Honors Outreach Network and the Honors Program will host
a Fireside Chat Series this fall semester! Fireside Chats are an Honors
tradition, and will take place in Larzelere Hall in the Honors Alumni Room in
the basement. This Fireside Chat will feature prestigious guest speaker, Dr.
Brad Swanson who will speak about Creationism and Evolution. Dr. Swanson is an
Honors professor in the Biology department, and he teaches a variety of Honors
courses, including HON 321 “Scientific Method: Beaver Island". Seating for this fireside chat is limited, so you must call

Chicago Trip with Office of International Affairs
November 10-11, 2012
The
Honors Program and the Office of International Affairs are teaming up again to
send a group of students to Chicago for a weekend. Honors students and
international students will have the opportunity to sign up to ride the bus to
Chicago and stay in a hotel overnight. Once in Chicago, students will explore
the Windy City on their own. Watch for more details soon!
